Morbark 2230 Wood Chipper Success Story: Granit Group

Morbark 2230 Wood Chipper Success Story: Granit Group

For Granite Group, the decision to upgrade to the Morbark 2230 Wood Chipper was clear-cut — even before the chipper arrived on site. As one of Victoria’s go-to teams for emergency tree removal and environmental land clearing, Granite needed a machine that could match the scale and pace of its operations. The 2230 has done exactly that — and more.

The team at The Australian Arbor Age met with our experts in tree care equipment, Stuart Samson and Cody Lehmann, alongside Jon from Granite Group, to hear more about the Morbark 2230 Wood Chipper and how it has performed. Watch the full video below:

A Company Built for Big Jobs

Granite Group operates across three core divisions — Earth and Construction, Environmental Services, and Tree Works — offering a full range of solutions from large-scale land clearing through to eco-conscious site rehabilitation and tree care. The Tree Works division handles everything from stump grinding and tree removals to milling and arborist reporting.

When the team took on a major project at the National Golf Club’s Long Island site in Frankston, they needed a chipper that could keep up with a demanding schedule and thousands of cubic metres of material. Their choice: the Morbark 2230 Wood Chipper, supplied by long-time industry partner Monitor.

A Serious Step Up in Power

Upgrading from a smaller chipper, Director Jon Rogash was immediately drawn to the Morbark’s horsepower.

“When we looked at the Morbark 2230, it had 365 horsepower, and in my eyes it was just the straight-out brute horsepower,” said Jon. “It was a no-brainer.”

Matched with a 15-tonne excavator fitted with a rotating grapple saw, the chipper has proven its worth in tough conditions — efficiently handling bulky foliage, logs, and oversized material without breaking a sweat.

“When we team up some of the other equipment with this machine, we can break down big logwood, and it doesn’t struggle pulling it through,” Jon explained. “It’s got the horsepower to pick up the drum speed, and the angle on the chute eliminates blockages.”

Smarter, Safer Operation

While raw power was a major selling point, safety and usability were also high on the list. Granite runs a machine-feed-only system to ensure no ground crew are exposed to risk near the hopper.

“We run it straight off the machine with the remote, and nobody’s in harm’s way,” Jon said. “It eliminates any risk of people being caught in foliage or things like that.”

He also praised the top infeed roller for its aggressive feed, noting that it grips and processes material quickly — reducing the need for extra handling or ‘lift-and-crush’ work.

Support That Delivers

Granite Group has worked with Monitor on multiple machines over the years, and Jon credits their responsiveness and product knowledge as key to long-term success.

“It’s been really good,” he said. “Whenever there’s been an issue – which has been very rarely – it’s been fixed straight away. And parts are readily available for the Cummins engine across Australia.”

While the 2230 is currently ticking all the boxes, Granite Group already has its sights set on the future.

“We’re not going to upsize our fleet for now,” Jon said, “but in two years we’ll look at upgrading to a newer model — and it’s a no-brainer: we’ll be staying with Morbark.”
